Grandma Keller's Apple Kuchen is a recipe that has been handed down for generations in our German family. Grandma was an incredible baker and made this recipe quite often. Instructions to make Apple kuchen:
- Heat oven to 350°
- Cut butter into dry cake mix till crumbly. (I use two butter knives but there is a really cool kitchen tool out there called a pastry blender - you could get one of those). The mix should look like dry oatmeal.
- Pack mixture lightly into ungreased a 13 x 9 x 2 pan and build up slight edges. Lightly press not industrial packing.
- Bake 10 minutes. Yep that’s it just 10.
- Arrange apple slices on warm crust. If your apple slices do not cover the surface you may have to use another can of apples. The darn apple pie people have gotten stingy.
- Mix cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle over the apples.
- Blend sour cream and egg yolks and sprinkle that over the apples. This topping will not cover all the apples so don’t fret. Just don’t leave huge gaps.
- Bake 25 minutes or till edges are light brown but please please please do not overbake this or the crust will be so hard you’ll need a jackhammer to get through it.
- Let cool at least 15 minutes. Do not Give in to the peer pressure your family will be dishing out as they will want to cut into it right away. Don’t let them.
- Refrigerate any leftovers and warm in microwave if necessary when you eat it next. About 10 seconds. But I’m pretty sure there won’t be any leftovers. If yours is anything like my family they’ll be eating it out of the pan with the fork while you’re not watching.
- And remember your mood comes through while your cooking so be happy and it’ll taste better.
